When pleasure calls, we answer. Whether you’re home, a teenager, ashamed of buying a sex toy or simply into experimentation, you can find yourself using things that you find around the home to pleasure yourself.
As you all know, every consensual type of pleasure that doesn't harm others is valid and we always encourage people to follow their instinct and to experience whatever they wish. However, when we improvise using objects that have a totally different purpose, we do not always stop to think whether these things can damage our intimate parts or be safe for our health.
From a survey we recently carried out inside our community, there are some objects that are usually used as do-it-yourself sex toys: hair brushes, deodorants, flutes, electric toothbrushes, electric razors (oh God), smartphones (because they vibrate), shower heads and food (the most popular are courgettes, carrots and cucumbers).
Risks and precautions to take
Some of them are totally fine, like shower heads or bathtub faucets; they can really satisfy you (as long as you don’t pour water that is too hot or too cold of course). Many others, on the contrary, can damage your vaginal or anal flora - especially if you use them without some form of protection. Moreover, they can get stuck in your body, irritate and create micro injuries in your intimate parts.
One of the aspects you need to bear in mind is that, when you’d like to please yourself with an object whose purpose is not one of a vibrator or sex toy, you should always put a condom on it.
For example, a flute, a spray deodorant or a smart phone are all objects that are usually placed on shelves, touched by many people, sometimes stored in luggage and left around inside and outside your house. As we know, these are all places full of germs and bacteria.
To avoid getting bacterial infections, rushes or any form of alteration in your intimate mucosa, you should protect yourself and always use a condom on these objects.
All those vaguely cylindrical objects that vibrate can stimulate your clitoris in a pleasurable way - such as, foreo or clarisonic (face massager to remove make-up), electric toothbrushes, epilators or electric razors. But they are potentially dangerous.
Electric toothbrush heads and electric razors (needless to say that you should first remove the blades) can injure your intimate parts. The most harmless could be foreos as they resemble sex toys a lot - but as we usually place cosmetics, make-up removers and soaps on them, it can alter your vaginal flora or irritate your most sensitive parts.
Always use a condom
In order to have protection from germs and a barrier to separate your intimate parts from these objects, you should always use a condom. Especially if you brush your teeth with these objects.
Cucumbers and vegetables in general are super cheap, always available in your fridge and easy to handle. But it’s always the same story, washing them with water is not enough to remove dirt and pesticides, you should place a condom on them.
Talking about vegetables, as they are on the softer side, they can easily break down. And removing pieces of food left in your vagina is very difficult. If this happens in your anus, it’s even more dangerous, because the vagina is an ended canal and the anus is not. In this situation you will need a doctor. Again, using a condom can protect you from these situations.

Using objects that are not sex toys in your anus can add another risk - losing the object inside. Body safe sex toys, have a base that is atleast 6 cm wide, to stay outside your anus and to have a good handle.
To sum it up, if you have never thought about buying a sex toy or you are unsure about which one could be right for you, the most important thing is to be careful when using domestic objects to masturbate. Pleasure is important but so is your intimate health!
