Guide on How to Clean Toys
A surprising 19% of men and 36% of women never clean their toys.
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that hygiene and cleaning are especially important. We must carry this through in our everyday lives, even sex toys.
We are talking about products that get in contact with our most intimate parts, whose mucous membranes are incredibly fast in absorbing everything they touch. When cleaning your toys, you must consider: the safety of the toy and the safety of the body. Always use products that are safe for your toys and for your body.
Cleaning toys help with their preservation, like a maintenance service. But, most importantly, toys get disinfected because they come into contact with our intimate parts. If you share your toys with other partner(s), they can transmit STIs and infections, through body fluids that remain on the toy. If you choose to share your toys, you can cover them with a condom, which is then taken off before passing the toy to another person.
Even when using toys on your own, they get moved from the anus to the vagina. Cleaning toys or using condoms is crucial to stop the spread of bacteria around your genitals.
Once used, you should always clean or disinfect your toys, before placing them in a case or a bag (when you first buy a toy, many brands already include a bag in the package) - this will protect your toy from bacteria and dust. Let’s repeat all together: placing your toy on your nightstand, among all your stuff, like in the movies, is not a good idea!
How do you clean them? Be careful in choosing a cleaner that is compatible with the material of your toy - on pureeros you’ll always find medical grade silicone toys (a non-porous material, easy to clean) and a range of natural, water-based cleaners, that respect your toys and your body.

Once cleaned, the toy will come into contact with your intimate parts so it’s even more important to choose a natural product - avoid all cleaners that contain substances that can irritate your skin, especially if you get easily irritated. Here you can find the cleaner from the Pjur line, which is clinically tested for female intimate health.
Cleaning your toy is very simple. Whether you choose a spray (have you seen the newest one by Dame?), a liquid or a foaming cleaner, put some of it on your toy, grab a tissue or a dry, clean cloth and rub its surface for a few seconds. Then, throw away the tissue or wash the cloth and place your toy in its case or bag.
It’s fine if you prefer to clean your toy only with water and soap, but be careful on the soap - it has to be delicate, otherwise it can ruin your product. If you fancy, you can also put your steel or stone toy in the washing machine, as long as it doesn’t have electrical components!
You must always sterilize your toy before its first use because they have just come out of a factory. Always remember to disinfect them as soon as they arrive at your place.
This may be silly to highlight, as almost all modern sex toys are 100% waterproof - but be sure to check if they are resistant to water before washing/submerging them!
If you have doubts about the materials and compatibility of the toy you bought, always refer to the instructions included in the packaging and the brand’s information on their website.
Always remember: cleaning, hygiene and attention to detail are fundamental to better enjoy your intimate moments, alone or with your partner(s).
