An acronym for lesbian (a homosexual woman), gay (a homosexual man), bisexual (a person attracted to a person of one’s own gender and people of other genders), transgender (people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were thought to be at birth) and queer (someone who is questioning their sexual orientation/gender identity). It refers to all people who are marginalised due to sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

The acronym, which is often used as a blanket term to refer to the queer community, first became popular in the 1980s when it replaced the term gay to reference all those who do not identify as heterosexual.
